On Freddy Adu: Young Soccer Superstar
Born in Ghana, probably in 1989, Freddy Adu and his family moved to Maryland in 1997. By 2004, he had graduated from high school, became a U.S. citizen, played in the under-17 World Cup Championships, joined D.C. United as the highest-paid player in Major League Soccer, and landed a Nike contract for "about 1 million." With short, direct sentences and plenty of color photographs, the book offers a brief positive, and attractive introduction to Adu, ending with a chronology, a glossary, short lists of recommended articles and Web sites, and a list of "Works Consulted" (newspaper and magazine articles). With its excellent action photos and simple vocabulary, this volume from the Robbie Reader series will appeal to many middle-school soccer fans as well as those in the target grade range.
