Alfred Nobel had been called many names in his lifetime, but he was most hurt when he was referred to as a "merchant of death." The great inventor of dynamite was devastated to learn that he was regarded in such a negative manner. There were so many peaceful uses for his invention that he could not fathom why people claimed that his wealth came mainly from devising innovative ways "to mutilate and kill." Alfred did not want to be remembered like that! So in his will he ordered that his vast estate be invested and that the interest be awarded each year as prizes "to those persons who during the previous year have rendered the greatest services to mankind." This is the story of the moody and reclusive inventor and his great legacy, the Nobel Prize.

Coretta Scott King grew up in the Jim Crow South, a place where even a trip to the ice cream shop was a reminder that she wasn't an equal citizen. She dreamed of being a singer, and attended colleges where she was a minority. When she met Martin Luther King Jr. her life changed. While he became famous for his civil rights efforts, Coretta did her part organizing, giving speeches and enduring dangerous harassment. Her house was even bombed. After her husband's death she continued working in his memory fighting social injustice. The Coretta Scott King Awards honor her work and celebrate the best works by African-American writers and illustrators for young people.

In May 1904, Joseph Pulitzer wrote an article in The North American Review urging Columbia University to found a school of journalism. He endowed the university with $2 million, $500,000 of which was to be used to establish awards for excellence in writing. At first, Columbia was hesitant about accepting Pulitzer's endowment. But one year after his death in 1911, the Columbia School of Journalism was founded and the first Pulitzer Prizes were awarded in 1917. Those awards have come to represent the ultimate recognition in American journalism.

This is the story of a Hungarian Jewish immigrant who got his start in America at a small newspaper in St. Louis, and his great legacy, the Pulitzer Prize.

Michael Printz was not a nationally recognized celebrity. He wasn't a sports hero, a TV star, or an inventor. He was a librarian. And while no one ever became famous for being a librarian, Michael Printz was as close as one could get. For during his lifetime, Michael Printz was a champion of young adults. His personal integrity, his love of books, and his passionate belief in his ability to change young people's lives for the better made Mike an exceptional person.

All who knew Mike mourned his untimely death in 1996. But he is forever remembered in the children's book award given by the Young Adult Library Services Association that bears his name. Here is the long overdue story of the outstanding librarian from Topeka, Kansas who was, indeed, a great achiever.
