Alvar Nuñez Cabeza de Vaca was born in 1490 in southwestern Spain. From an early age, he wanted to match the great deeds of his grandfather, Pedro de Vera Mendoza, who became famous for the conquest of Grand Canary Island for Spain. By his mid-thirties, Cabeza de Vaca was a seasoned military officer, ready to conquer more land for Spain. But as it turned out, Cabeza de Vaca spent more time in the New World living as a slave than as a conqueror. He traveled across Texas into the southwest enduring incredible adventures. It would be ten years later, in 1537, before he could set sail to Spain again.

The story of Cesar Chavez and the founding of the United Farm Workers is well known. But what has gone largely untold is the story of a gutsy young woman named Dolores Huerta, who spent her life alongside of Chavez fighting for the rights of farm workers all over the United States. When Chavez died in 1993, it was Huerta who vowed to carry on the fight. Now in her seventies, she still marches for the cause, and despite some insurmountable obstacles has been responsible for considerable improvement in the lives of those workers whose collective voice has barely been heard.

It is only in recent years that a Spanish soldier named Gaspar de Portola has received the recognition he deserves as one of the most important figures in California history. Born in 1714, he chose a military career and went into the service of the Spanish crown. When Charles III began to receive reports that Russian fur traders wanted to claim land in California, Portola volunteered to lead an expedition to set up bases on the California coast in San Diego and Monterey. Perhaps because Portola left California immediately after the founding of Monterey, he did not become well known. In 1969 and 1970, when California celebrated its bicentennial, Portola was given greater recognition.
